Tough Guys and Girls Cry
Friday, March 11, 2011
Maquinna Pub, Tofino
Tickets $6 • Doors 9:00pm
The individual members of Tough Guys & Girls Cry spanned the prairies before forming in the surf rich town of Tofino, BC. No longer landlocked, still months of heavy rain and isolation provided ample opportunity to write and record some original works in the spirit of good times under storm. As surfers and skaters their music reflects the pursuit of fun as shown in their brand of pop ballads, chanted to the beat of the Ramones. Highly influenced by pop culture from the past and present tggc offer film inspired songs like ‘Adrian,’ while authoring original epic tales as in ‘Buffalo,’ the story of 18th century Native American seeking revenge on a white buffalo who killed his brother. Their inspiration ranges from Dinosaur Jr, Blood Brothers and David Bowie creating a patchwork of style and diverse palette from which to create.
The Real McKenzies
Saturday, March 12, 2011
Tofino Legion
Tickets $15 • Doors 9:00pm
The Real McKenzies are a Vancouver-based Celtic punk band. Donning the traditional (and sometimes not so traditional) Highland garb of kilts and sporrans, the group proudly displays its Scottish heritage. Songs include Scots Wha’ Ha’e, Thistle Boy, Ceilidh, and Sauny Bean Clan (a ballad based on the true story of Scotland’s famous cannibal clan). In addition, interpretations of traditional Scottish folk songs round out their extensive repertoire. The band is made up of six men claiming to be entirely Scottish, while on stage if at no other time. The Real McKenzies have played over 3,000 gigs. Constant, rigorous touring & an innate sense of always being in the right place at the wrong time.
Smalltown Empire
Saturday, March 12, 2011

smalltown empire is getting hitched and they are having a stag and doe, honeymoon fundraiser at the maq. you know the story, love and music brought this couple together a few years ago and they have been playing on the west coast ever since. with their nuptials coming up in the spring the band decided to rock out for love, so come down and enjoy some fun tunes and good vibes.
the night will also include solo performances from anne klazek and ronny weeks as well as a special guest appearance by velvet lace (joel gray on the bass and liam mackenzie on the drums). future plans for the band include getting married, living 'til sighs close minds and of course going to kauai to chill for a bit. when asked to comment ronny weeks replied "if you can't rock out for love then what can you rock for?"

Tofino Community Hall
Tickets: $45• Doors 7:00 pm
Formed in the spring of 2008, Quoia {Kwoi - a} is a collective of musicians currently residing on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Known for their high-energy liveshow and uplifting grooves, this genre-hopping group is swiftly attracting new fans of all ages. Quioa is quite thrilled to have two songs used in an internationally distributed surf film and are also proud of the major role they played in producing the highly successful Tall Tree Music Festival in Port Renfrew, B.C.
Now nearing the completion of their second release, their future plans are simple. Continue to grow, and to fully enjoy themselves along the way! Quoia is made up of multi-instrumentalists Alex Nicholls, Mike Hann, Mike Roma, and Keith Gallant.
Jim Byrnes
Thursday, March 24, 2011
Black Rock Beach Resort, Ucluelet
Tickets: $45• Doors 7:00 pm
Some music simply can’t be played in the background. The first note catches you as the rest of the world melts away and you’ve got no choice but to stop what you were doing and listen. Really listen. Jim Byrnes’ new album, Everywhere West catches you that way. Everywhere West is nominated for a Juno Award for Blues Album of the year. Byrnes has already twice won the Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year.
For more than thirty years, Jim Byrnes has woven roots so deeply into the Northern Blues scene that it’s difficult to remember that this quintessentially Canadian icon was raised in St. Louis and his instantly recognizable gruff as sandpaper, sweet as honey voice was not always an essential part of the country’s musical landscape.
Headwater
Friday, March 25, 2011
Black Rock Beach Resort, Ucluelet
Tickets: $45• Doors 7:00pm
Hearing Headwater is like listening to the West Coast of Canada in song. Freewheeling, fierce, sentimental and sexy, the Vancouver, B.C., quartet has earned its reputation as one of the finest acoustic roots groups around the old-fashioned way. They worked hard! Made up of multi-instrumentalists Matt Bryant, Jonas Shandel, Patrick Metzger and Tim Tweedale.
Since forming in 2001, the group has logged in thousands of kilometres criss-crossing Western Canada and playing to anyone and everyone willing to give it some love. With hooks, driving rhythms, adventurous steel guitar and mandolin solos, and beautiful three-part vocal harmonies all featured in tight, concise under four-minute songs, they found fans fast. In fact, Headwater played at the Whale Festival in 2010 and had the dance floor packed!
