With so much hype surrounding the acoustic guitar/sunny beach vibe emanating from south of the border, it would be easy at first glance to overlook western Canada’s Jon and Roy, if not for the sheer strength of their music and growing legion of fans. Leading the charge like a modern day Bobby D (rolled with Sex wax and chillin’ on the beach) is Jon Middleton and his prolific songwriting coupled with the rhythmic flare of Roy Vizer. The Jon & Roy collaboration began in 2004 amidst the buzz of a cluster-house centurion. Upon repeated requests from those who had seen Jon Middleton perform around Victoria before, Jon picked up his vintage L’arrivé, closed his eyes and let loose. Having crossed the Georgia Straight earlier that day to visit the island, Roy tuned up his bongos and added some rhythm.

From their founding in 1981 by lead singer Mr.Chi Pig and brother’s Marc and Brent Belke, the band has broken up and reformed numerous times, each time gaining more and more loyal fans along the way eager to share the gospel of SNFU with the next generation. After nearly 10 full length albums, numerous EP's and splits and several worldwide tours, the undisputed legends have more than staked their claim in the Canadian, not to mention global punk rock history books.

Five Alarm Funk is a Vancouver-based, 12-piece rhythm machine that pounds out a delirium-inducing live show, brimming with original funk and afro-beat grooves. The band’s horn and percussion-driven instrumental jams feature searing guitar leads and horn solos wailing and soaring above a four-man percussion maelstrom that is grounded by Neil Towers’ juicy bass lines. The band’s wicked cross-rhythms and frenetic, costumed stage show appeals to jazz fans and clubs kids alike. Five Alarm Funk has carved out a word-of-mouth fan base from a series of crowd-pleasing performances at clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout b.c. Interaction between the crowd and the band is a huge part of the show, and they try to make every show an event.
